Blue Cabinets are all the rage right now. Unlike other fad designs, we feel like this one has some serious staying power. It allows homeowners to depart from the typical white, grey, or wood cabinetry while still being versatile enough to work with many other tones and materials. It functions well as a neutral while still bringing color to the room.
The various shades of blue homeowners can choose from lends to its versatility. Choosing a desaturated grey-blue creates a sense of peaceful sophistication. Amp up the saturation with deep cobalt blue for a bold statement that works well in contemporary or nautical design styles. Bright blues with warm undertones adds energy and works great in a sunny, coastal style. Pale, cool blue creates a crisp clean design. Play around with saturation, hue, and brightness to find the blue that’s just right for you.
Blue plays well with others. Its complementary color is orange, which means that blue cabinets will work well with brass, bronze, wood floors, and any other warm tones you choose for your kitchen. Of course, it’s still a cool color itself, so it works great with grey and whites as well. The key is to make sure the shades of your various colors work well together. Dark grey plus dark blue can be overwhelming, but white or light grey and blue is a classic combination.
You also don’t have to make your entire kitchen blue. One of our favorite features of this trend is that people are using blue as an accent. A deep blue island surrounded by white perimeter cabinets is one of our favorite looks. We’re also big fans of using blue for just the base cabinets as a grounding element. It’s exciting to see how people use color to define the space.
How do you feel about the blue cabinet trend? Is it here to stay or just a passing fad? Are you more of a deep, royal blue person or a light bright blue person?
