Recently, we had written about Medallion Cabinetry’s Finish Folio, which is new for this year. It includes 38 new colors, all of which are available as finishes for cabinets in their Gold and Platinum lines.
In this edition, we are going to focus on applications for their Sea-inspired Blue & Cool Gray palette. This palette includes Billow, Dusk, Gale, Celeste, Lakeshore, and Tidal.
To us, Billow conjures up the sights, sounds, and smells of sailing: a slight breeze, the smell of saltwater, the creaking of a dark-brown mast, the sound a sail makes when it is filling with wind, as the vessel moves forward.
Suzanne DeRusha, Medallion’s Design & Trends Expert describes Billow as, “A powdery lighthearted blue that can be a homage to historical or contrasted as cool and contemporary. It all depends on whether [you have] a memory attached to the original color or if [you] see it as an entirely new and exciting idea!”
Color and Memories
Suzanne is very perceptive and makes an excellent point that you should consider: Do you have a memory attached to a particular color? Experiencing something via one of our senses can create an emotional response. For example, you may have spent many happy hours with your grandmother in her blue kitchen.
Using colors that make you feel at home is a great way to incorporate your influences into your kitchen design. One might also assume that, if you feel at home in your kitchen, your family and friends will, as well.
Here is an example of a Billow-based pallet that Suzanne created:
You might be surprised at how Billow, an obviously cool color, works well with the warm and darker finishes. Of course, it’s hard to imagine how they might work in a design, since they all have the same visual weight in this example.

The Designer’s Craft
In our opinion, this is a perfect example of a designer’s craft. Although Billow makes up less than 1/3 of the visual weight of this image, it has just enough presence. The simple and elegant beams and island work surface are in Cherry French Roast and the floor is Cherry Peppercorn. The guide for the sliding door mirrors Cherry Smoke.
The highlight of this design is the stained barn wood panel door that incorporates all of the colors shown in the Billow Palette.
